Most people know the Lake District being a  popular destination for all walks of life; from walkers, climbers, bike riders (both mountain and road), family breaks away and romantic get aways. The Lake District has a lot to offer and is hard to beat. It is a national park in Cumbria in the northwest of England and is known for its high rugged mountains, lakes and historic market towns such as Kendal, Ambleside, Grasmere, Coniston, Hawkshead  and Keswick to name a few. The towns and mountain ranges can become very popular in the height of summer and even in winter. However,  if you look a little deeper you can get away from popular places that are nestled deep in the lakes or just on the outskirts.

Cockermouth

On the outskirts of the national park is Cockermouth, a quiet market town that is not overwhelmed by the tourist atmosphere like towns such as Ambleside or Grasmere. It is a hidden gem in some respects, as it is ideally located with easy accessibility to the centre of the national park. From Cockermouth you can easily venture into the quieter parts of the Lake District and at the end of the day, you can meander back to the solitude of your home base.

We have stayed in the little village of Grey Southern just on the outskirts, in wonderful little Airbnb’s called La’al Cottage and T’uther Cottage that are nestled next to each other, which are a steal in itself and perfect retreats to recover and relax from long days out exploring in the mountians.
