Embsay Crag & Rylstone Cross

Summary

Embsay Moor is a large area of moorland to the North of Skipton. Much of it can be rough underfoot, however, there are wide 360 extensive views from the Crag and the cross, covering the Dale and beyond. It is a short but rewarding walk, setting off from Embsay Reservoir while following several tracks along the moors and over to Rylstone Cross and back via the bleak moors.

The Hike

There had been a cold snap that week in England, which gave large amounts of frost and ice on the ground. I love walking in conditions like these. Purely because I like the feeling of being wrapped up warm, seeing my breath in the air, the frigid chill on my skin, and hearing the crunch beneath my feet as I walk on the frosted ground.

A friend and I had planned a sunrise walk up to the Crag, hoping to catch the sun as it rose that morning. I knew that the remoteness of the moors would offer just that, and while we began at 7 am, it wasn't long until we saw our first glimpse of the sun. We crested the top of Embsay Crag, and at that moment, the rising sun cast a rosy hue across the morning sky while the golden moors of sunlight lit up the scene. It felt great to roam such a quiet and unspoiled piece of land. We followed along the tracks and down a long accessible track before we emerged at Rylstone Cross. A grand place to stop for a coffee and enjoy the morning glow of the valley below.

Meanwhile, the return felt just as rewarding as the beginning. Views of Rylstone, Linton, Cracoe, Gargrave, and even Pendle Hill filled our minds as we meanders our way back down towards Bardon Reservoir.

A perfect way to start the day.
